Wood Stove

Vermont Castings, Aspen Wood Stove
With less than a week to go before we move into the bus, we are in full speed finishing mode. So in less than 6 hours today, Phil installed the whole wood stove and chimney before the afternoon rain came. He also made the first baby fire. We will need to make several of these little fires during the week to slowly bring up the temperature and then have one big fire to cure the paint and get rid of the "new stove smell". Then we can have normal fires after that. Just in time for warm spring weather!

  1. How are you planning to finish the corner walls behind the stove?

  2. I think we're leaning towards steel sheeting, for cost and aesthetics. Copper or tile would be nice, but both are impractical for various reasons. That micore insulating board that's on there now is doing a pretty swell job though... just doesn't look super good.

  3. We love our little Aspen! The new stove smell might linger past your first few burns, and it's pretty pungent. Just a warning. The copper flashing looks great!

  4. Thanks! We love ours too. The bus is so cozy with fires at night. There was no more smell after the first real fire, but this model is like no other stove I've used, since you need to keep the door open for air flow in front. Do you have that same problem?

  5. yeah, we've had that problem, too. I've also noticed that the dampener in back can slip off of it's little hook so that when you open it with the lever, the door stays closed. I had three frustrating nights of fires going out until I realized that the vent was closed.

  6. I am about to install a wood stove into my 98 International and I have some questions about clearances, materials etc, my main concern being affixing the chimney to the insulated roof. Might I be able to pick your brain a wee bit?

  7. hi :) i'm in the process of building a house bus myself. and i just got an old rusty wood stove from the scrap metal place. gotta sand the crap out of it and paint it black and burn off the paint,... but after that i'm gonna be installing it. wondering what you think about having the exhaust go right out the window? i'm putting mine in the exact same place as yours. which is funny. but yea, if your not annoyed with people asking you idea questions, my name is river and my email is riverina.dawn@gmail.com get in touch. thanks
